The quiz

Read a name. Find it on the map.

That's the whole game, and it's easy to get started. Each round you see a state name, tap where you think it is, and find out right away whether you were right.

Read

The state name appears at the top. Is it Vermont or New Hampshire? Iowa or Idaho?

Tap

Select a state on the map and confirm. Alaska and Hawaii sit in their own boxes below the lower 48.

See

Right or wrong, you see the state's name and population, so every answer teaches you something.

02

Spaced repetition

See each state again just before you'd forget it

Instead of drilling everything equally often, spaced repetition times each review. Get a state right and the next review moves further out. Miss it and it comes back soon. Try it with one state:

Day 0: you see Wyoming for the first time.

A simplified illustration. The app uses FSRS, a modern, open-source scheduling algorithm also used by well-known flashcard apps, which adapts each interval to your own answer history.

    Questions

    From the app's FAQ

How many new states should I learn each day?

Start with a small number. You will review the states you learn today in the near future, so your daily workload is larger than just the new ones. With 50 states, even three a day gets you through all of them in under three weeks.

What happens if I skip scheduled reviews?

Nothing breaks. Do them when you have time. The app takes the delay into account when it schedules the next reviews.

How do I deal with too many reviews waiting?

Set your daily goal to 0 for a while. This stops new states from being added, so you can catch up on the reviews that are already waiting. Raise the goal again when the daily load feels manageable.

    Which areas are included?

All 50 states. Washington, D.C. and US territories such as Puerto Rico are not included.

    What comes after the states?

The same app has County Savvy, all 3,143 US counties. Your first 30 counties there are free.
